Chaim Grade’s story is a classic of modern Yiddish literature and modern Jewish thought. It is a story of two former classmates who rediscover one another after the Holocaust and resume their old debates about God, man, and history. Since its appearance in 1952 the meaning of the “quarrel” has been debated by readers. Now, in a new translation from the Yiddish by eminent scholar Prof. Ruth R. Wisse, we English readers understand that it is more relevant than ever.
Ruth R. Wisse is professor emeritus of Yiddish literature and comparative literature at Harvard University and a senior fellow of the Tikvah Fund. Join her for a conversation with Jeffrey Saks, Director of Research at Agnon House, to discuss Chaim Grade’s enduring legacy and the relevance of My Quarrel with Hersh Rasseyner to the English-speaking Jewish world 60 years after its arrival in Yiddish.
