Rachel HaMeshoreret (the Poetess)
Zoom class with Prof. Wendy Zierler
In 1920 Rachel Bluwstein (1890-1931) published her first poem, “Halakh Nefesh” (State of Mind) in the famed journal, HaShiloah, originally founded by the cultural Zionist, Ahad Ha’am (Asher Ginsburg) in 1896. It was the first poem by a woman in that famed journal.
This session will look at a selection of Rachel’s most beloved and famous poems, some of which have been set to music, including her tributes to the land of Israel and biblical figures, and her poetic reflections on being terminally ill with tuberculosis.
